Harold L. Smale

Harold L. Smale, 90, of Pottstown, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at his home.

Born January 12, 1932, in Pottstown, he was the son of the late George D. and Beatrice M. (Moyer) Smale. He and the love of his life, his wife of 47 years, Patricia A. (Paul) Smale, were married on May 3, 1975, at St. John's UCC Church, Pottstown.

Harold served his country honorably and faithfully as a Lieutenant J.G. in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

Harold owned and operated Smale's Printery, Pottstown, for over 70 years. He was very active in the Kiwanis Club of Pottstown, where he was the oldest and longest standing member of 62 years. He was the editor of the Bulletin for 54 years, was Chairman of the Support of Churches Committee, and was the chief cook for the Pottstown Cluster of Religious Communities breakfast each year.

Harold was a longtime member of New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church, Gilbertsville. He was a member of church council for over 25 years, serving as Vice President. He also was active with the property committee, was President of Sunday School, taught Sunday School and was the financial secretary. Harold was a 1949 graduate of Pottstown High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in business at Ursinus College in 1953. Harold also graduated from the Officer Candidate School, US Navy, Newport, Rhode Island.

Harold truly enjoyed serving others and being an integral part of his community. He enjoyed spending time as Pat's gardener and loved playing in the dirt. He also found great joy traveling with Pat and spending quality time with his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Patricia, are his children, D. Scot Smale, husband of Kelly (Kirkland) Smale, Boyertown, Debra S. Smale, Enola, Darlene S. (Smale) Medlar, wife of Jeffrey W. Medlar, Pottstown, his step-children, Vaughn Paul Zimmerman, husband of Wendy (Engle) Zimmerman, Boyertown, Cheryl A. (Zimmerman) Goodwin, wife of Mark Goodwin, Gilbertsville, and Susan K. (Zimmerman) Mickletz, wife of Anthony E. "Ed" Mickletz, Pottstown. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren with one more on the way, and by his sisters, Hazel L. (Smale) Levan, wife of John Levan, Boyertown and Mary Alice (Smale) VanDyke, widow of Wallace VanDyke, Boyertown.

Funeral Services for Harold will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at 11:00 am at New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2941 Lutheran Rd, Gilbertsville. Burial with full Military Honors provided by the US Navy and the Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion, Honor Guard, Topton, will take place immediately following the service at the church cemetery.

A viewing will be held prior to the services from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at the church.
