Bruce T. Schutt

April 28, 1956 – December 2, 2018

Whether it was keeping his sons up late perfecting the grammar in their school papers, or digging into a soon-to-be Eagle Scout’s board of review, Bruce Schutt could not be rushed. So it’s no wonder that he delayed a terminal prognosis for 17 years while he inspired others and helped improve the world around him.

Whether you met and knew Bruce A (pre-brain surgery number 1), Bruce B (pre-brain surgery number 2), Bruce C (pre-brain surgery number 3) or Bruce D (you get the picture here, don’t you?), you likely left a visit understanding he was a man of principles: god, community and family.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Elkridge, Md., Bruce was devoted to the love of his life, Teresa, and tireless in providing for and teaching his boys, Jeff, Kyle and Bryan. Sunday’s were for church, chores and Car Talk. Thursday’s were for Boy Scouts. Every day was for hard work. He was a cyclist and a photographer who loved a cool fall day.

The family was lucky enough to see him become an even more inspirational scout leader and devout Christian as Bruce B. He refused to let his disability define him. Unable to continue his profession, he spent hours volunteering in the community and supporting his family. Using a cane to get around, Bruce B wore a backpack so he could always “be prepared.” In that backpack was Troop 183’s ever-growing list of Eagle Scouts, a point of pride Bruce carried with him to the end.

Bruce C amplified his community involvement while the boys moved out with families of their own. A walker could get almost everywhere he needed, so he was always looking for a ride to the next opportunity to volunteer. To those of you who helped with rides, Bruce loved you so much for enabling him to give back.

Bruce D became a man of perseverance. Being wheelchair bound robbed him of much of his ability to volunteer. So, he focused on his grandchildren and rediscovered his love for the outdoors through a carefully planned backyard. Let it be written that Bruce Schutt never gave up.

On December 2, 2018, god called all of his Bruces home.

Bruce was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Grace. He is survived by Teresa, his three boys and their wives (Melissa, Lisa and Tiffany), three siblings (John, Jean and Keith), his 12 nieces and nephews, and seven grandchildren.

Two visitations will be held at St. Paul's UCC in Fleetwood, Pa. The first will be Friday, December 7, from 6 p.m. ET to 8 p.m. ET. The second will be Saturday, December 8, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's UCC on Saturday, December 8, at 12 p.m. followed by a lunch at the Fleetwood Borough Hall across the street from the church.
