George J. DeLong Obituary

George J. DeLong, 82, of Fleetwood, passed away on Monday morning, July 26, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born October 24, 1938 in Reading, he was the son of the late Anna E. (Moyer) DeLong and Charles Wadlinger. He and the love of his life, his wife of 60 years, Jeannette F. (Reinhart) DeLong, were married on December 24, 1960 in New Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Fleetwood.

George served his country honorably and faithfully as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

After serving in the US Marine Corps, George began working for Roy Heffner in Walnuttown. He went on to work as a carpenter for 35 years for the Carpenters Union Local 1595, Philadelphia. George was very involved at his church, New Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served on church council, was liaison to the boy scout troop, was a member of the cemetery board and was a youth mentor.

George was an active member of his community. He volunteered for many years with the Fleetwood Fire Company and Fleetwood Ambulance. George also served as a Fleetwood Fire Police Officer for over 30 years and was the Fleetwood Fire Police Captain for 10 years.

George was a member of the Pike Township Sportsman's Association and worked for over 20 years with the Boy Scouts having achieved the Order of the Arrow. He also served as District Commissioner for the Boy Scouts. George attended the Funk's School, Rockland Township, Kutztown High School and Palm Beach High School before joining the Marine Corps. George enjoyed wood working, model trains, doing home repairs, and most of all, spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Jeannette, George is survived by his two daughters, Lori M. (DeLong) Nester, wife of Ray A. Nester Jr., Fleetwood, and Dawn R. (DeLong) Mathews, wife of Mike Mathews, Saxton. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew R. Nester, Fleetwood, Nichole R. (Nester) Martin, wife of Darren Martin, Pittsburgh, and Rebecca M. Keller, Washington, DC, his great-grandchildren, Finn C. Martin and Raven C. Martin and by his siblings, Norman C. DeLong, husband of Chrissy DeLong, Green Acres, FL and Elaine (DeLong) Holt, wife of William Holt, Crescent City, FL.

Memorial services for George will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 11:00 am at Walbert Funeral Home & Cremation Services, PC, 14390 Kutztown Rd, Fleetwood. Burial will follow with full Military Honors at New Jerusalem Cemetery, Fleetwood. A visitation will be held Saturday from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at the funeral home.
